Hello, my name is Richard Wyrick. I am a 23 year old Computer Science Major at Front Range Community College. Originally I am from Palmdale California, born and raised, I moved to Colorado when I was 18. I have 4 brothers and no Sister, which means a lot of testosterone. Currently I am studying to become a software engineer and working full-time for a loan company. I love playing and watching basketball, although I don’t have time for much of either these days. Also I like playing video games, watching movies, and eating. We are learning about argumentative essays in my English 121 class. I have chosen to focus my essay on the question “is technology making us dumber?” I think because I have a computer background people might think I side with technology making us smarter. But I have also seen how technology has hurt us especially when it comes to the English language.

  1. Hi Richard,
Tough to pick a side on this. Technology obviously makes our lives easier, but I see us becoming a nation of people that can't remember phone numbers (everyone puts them on speed dial), or how to actually spell (predicted text on phones), and spend free time checking our phones or 'words with friends' all of which I see every day, working in a high school, and even with many teachers. Personally, I only need my phone to call and/or text - I know it does other things (it's a regular phone, not a smart phone), and a friend once told me that when she was in a fast food restaurant, the power went out temporarily, and the worker could not make change because the register tells them the change amount. Sad . . . . .
